I recently moved from SoCal to Texas and got a new room in the new place, which will be my main workspace for the next three years. I want to make it a home office — a comfy one that keeps me from going out to work at cafes. There aren’t really a lot of good cafes for working in the US, tbh. At least I haven’t found many. And none of them come close to my fav spot in Hong Kong back in Covid times.
Anyway. I’ve been thinking about arranging my stuff, buying new things, and decorating a little. I also watched a lot of videos of other people’s beautiful (I mean BEAUTIFUL) home offices. I really admire every single one of them. Each has its owner’s personality instilled in it. WOW, how nice.
Then I started to wonder: what should my room look like? I like so many things. I’m so curious about the world. I just can’t — and never could — figure out one identity or one style that represents me.
And then I opened ChatGPT and asked: based on what you know about me so far, if I had a room, what do you think it would look like? Generate a picture of “my world.”
I got this:

I must say I’m impressed by how much the free-plan GPT seems to know me after three years of using it — mostly for my work as a linguist.
It may be only a small part of me. But it is definitely part of me. I’ll take that. I’ll take the summaries as a reminder. This definitely takes some workload off my bestie Flora, whom I always turn to when I feel lost. It definitely makes me more curious about how my image in AI’s eyes changes over time. And, definitely, how I really change — or grow — over time.
I haven’t finished my home office setup. But I feel I don’t really need what I thought I did anymore.
